Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

You must be 17 years old to start driving a car on public roads in the UK. You can apply for your provisional driving licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.

How do I apply for a provisional driving licence?

You can apply for a provisional driving licence online via the GOV.UK website or by post by completing a D1 application form available from the Post Office.

How many lessons will I need to take before I can take my driving test?

The number of lessons needed varies from person to person. On average, it could take 45 hours of professional training combined with 20 hours of private practice to be test-ready. However, this varies widely depending on individual learning rates.

Can I learn to drive in my own car?

Yes, you can. However, you need to make sure the car is properly insured for you as a learner driver, and you should be supervised by an adult over 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years.

What does the driving test involve?

The UK driving test consists of a theory test and a practical test. The theory test includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. The practical test involves an eyesight check, two vehicle safety questions, and about 40 minutes of driving which includes a section of independent driving and possibly an emergency stop.

How do I book my driving test?

You can book both your theory and practical driving tests online on the GOV.UK website. Make sure you have your UK driving licence number, an email address, a credit or debit card for payment, and your instructor’s personal reference number if you want to check their availability.

What happens if I fail my driving test?

If you fail your driving test, you will need to wait at least 10 working days before you can take another test. It’s common for people to take more than one attempt to pass the test. Your driving instructor will give you feedback and help you to improve your skills for the next test.

How long is my theory test certificate valid for?

Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you passed. If you do not pass your practical test in this time, you will have to retake the theory test.
