You must book and manage your own car test

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner driver can book, change or cancel their car driving test. A driving instructor, family member or cancellation-finder service cannot do this for you. The official GOV.UK booking service is the safest place to book.

Your instructor can still discuss when you may be ready, give you their instructor reference number and confirm whether they and the tuition car are available. You should agree a suitable date with your instructor before completing the booking yourself.

You can change a car test only twice

Since 31 March 2026, a car test booking can be changed twice. Moving the date, looking for an earlier appointment or changing the test centre can each count as a change. If you need another change after using both, GOV.UK says you must cancel and make a new booking.

Test-centre moves are restricted

Since 9 June 2026, you can normally move a car test only to one of the three centres nearest to the centre where your current test is booked, or back to the centre first booked for that appointment.
